Reviews - What do customers think about New Surrender?

Shows off a wide variety of songs  Dec 26, 2009
So, there are some albums that you buy because you want to hear as much of a certain "type" of song as possible. We've all done this before. I'm thinking of albums like Owl City's "Ocean Eyes" and Boys Like Girls' self-titled album--both great albums, but definitely populated with a specific sound. Well, this is not that kind of album. Angry rock, catchy pop, and plaintive melodies all feature on the track list. Its strength? You don't get sick of listening to the album halfway through. Its potential weakness? It's likely that you will not like all of the tracks. I'm not so much a fan of the angry "noisier" songs (no offense), but I can tell from other reviews that they are well done for that genre.

Songs I like a lot:
Breaking - catchy, with intriguing lyrics
Blame Me! Blame Me! - angry and energetic
Haight St. - upbeat and happy
miserabile visu {ex malo bonum} - very slow, sort of mystical and fascinating

Songs I don't like much:
The Resistance - loud without being particular catchy, and the lyrics don't make much sense to me
Burn Out Brighter (northern lights) - the melody/chords are sort of weird

The lead singer's voice is really nice--full and powerful. I can't really comment on the other band members because I don't know what to look for, but they succeed in producing a very energetic sound. In general, the tunes are very catchy. One complaint about the lyrics: for many songs, the chorus has one line repeated several times, which really annoys me. But that could just be a pet peeve.

I'm not sure I would have bought the whole album if I had known all the songs beforehand, but there are enough good songs on here that I don't regret my choice.

Anberlin are amazing  Nov 29, 2009
Anberlin are my favorite band ever. I love all of their albums, and this is no different.
Probably my favorite Anberlin song is on this album - "Haight Street", and I also love others like "Breaking" and "Feel Good Drag".
5 stars. 10/10. 100000/100000 if that's possible. Buy this album - you won't regret it!

Surrender to the awesomeness!  Nov 22, 2009
This album is amazing, to put it simply. Anberlin has great range. It goes from upbeat to slow, meaningful to silly. The lyrics are amazing! I became a big fan after I saw them live. They're amazing live. Amazing on album. Anberlin is amazing.

A small step down, but still a solid album  Nov 11, 2009
There is no doubt that this album went a slightly different direction than Anberlin's earlier albums. Personally, it was not as good either. But a sub-par record from a great band is still a decent record. "The Resistance" and "Blame Me! Blame Me!" are instant classics in my mind. "Retrace" is a little slower and more mellow, but I think this style is actually very well suited to Stephen's voice. The biggest disappointment was "The Feel Good Drag". Certainly it is a great song, but the earlier version on Never Take Friendship Personal was much better, and the new version feels over-produced. Overall this album has some very good points, but it hasn't stuck with me like other Anberlin albums.

Nothing Better  Nov 8, 2009
This is a awesome cd from Anberlin a must have for fans. Great Harmonies and Melodies on the entire record. They are a great live band as well and see them when they come into town you don't wanna miss it.

My personal Favorites:
1.Feel Good Drag
2.Breaking
