| This is an outstanding book by a truly Spirit filled author that uncovers many of the deep spiritual meanings that lie below the surface of the letter of the Word in the book of Genesis. He shows how Genesis is very much a book about our lives, and all the characters represent different forms of life that can be found in us. The life forms advance from Adam (hiding from God, covering his nakedness with fig leaves, blaming his problems on others, etc) through Cain and Abel (flesh and spirit), Noah (regeneration), Abraham (spirit of faith), Isaac (spirit of sonship), Jacob (spirit of service), and finally to Joseph (ruler in Christ's image qualified through suffering). Jukes almost completely ignores the letter to deal with the hidden spiritual meaning. He applies the creation story to the new creation that occurs within us. With a man or a world, the story is the same. All is darkness and a raging deep until God starts working step by step until His image appears, and then He rests. Or take the story of Abraham, how he leaves Canaan (heavenly ground) for Egypt (sin, worldliness) because of a famine and there denies his wife (principles, grace). This is a mistake all people of faith have made at some point. We see how God graciously gets him out of trouble and back to Canaan. So Abraham's story is our story. This book is a well of deep water for those like Isaac who prefer to dig themselves and not for the Ishmaels of the world who take their water handed out in bottles (see Gen 21:14,19). | | | | It is the most spiritual book I have ever read Feb 11, 2000 |
| I have reread the book several times now and each time is a new adventure - seeing things in the book and The Book that I have never seen before. If your tired of the baby food that comes from the pulpit you might enjoy this one. It takes some work, but it's worth it.
