Item description for Until We Reach Home by Lynn Austin...

Overview
Leaving their homelands for America, Elin, Kirsten, and Sofia begin a difficult journey where they endure the ocean voyage in steerage and detention on Ellis Island--a journey where each woman will come to understand her secret longings and the meaning of home.

Publishers Description
Life in Sweden seems like an endless winter for three sisters after their mother's death and father's suicide. Elin feels the weight of responsibility for her sisters' welfare, and when circumstances become unbearable, she writes to her relatives in Chicago, pleading for help.
Joining sixteen million other immigrants who left their homelands for America between 1890 and 1920, Elin, Kirsten, and Sofia begin the long, difficult journey. Enduring the ocean voyage in steerage and detention on Ellis Island, their story is America's story. And in a journey fraught with hardships, each woman will come to understand her secret longings and the meaning of home.

From Publishers Weekly
In 1897, the promise of the gold-paved streets of America can heal the broken hearts and lives of orphans Elin, Kirsten and Sofia Carlson, if only they survive the transatlantic trip from Sweden. Family secretsranging from the disgrace of suicide to shameful relationschurn like the ocean itself during a two-week crossing, only to haunt the girls after they reach Ellis Island. From the first sighting of Lady Liberty through their travails to reach a newly rebuilt Chicago, the girls discover their strengths, a variety of new acquaintances and, most importantly, each other. And while they quickly experience the immigrant's harsh realities, they also find a way to make a life in their new world. Complete with room for happily-ever-after, this rich tale will not disappoint historical romance fans. Austin, three-time Christy Award winner, scores again with an engrossing tale of loss, determination and hope. (Oct.) Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.

Reviews - What do customers think about Until We Reach Home?

Very Inspiring and Spiritually Adventurous Read  May 3, 2010
The journey these girls endured was one that all Christians face at one time or another in their lives. We question our faith and if God has forsaken us. Through our many trials and tribulations we sometimes feel alone, but truly this book reveals God's love for us and even in the midst of our storm, he is still with us, giving us the strength to continue when we feel like giving up and throwing in the towel. I would recommend this book to anyone, as it is enlightening and uplifting to the soul.

A Disappointment.......  Apr 28, 2010
This story was a disappointment. I felt that the sisters in this story experienced too much hardship to be believed. It seemed that at every single turn something bad happened. The sisters were written as very weak and whiney. It got on my nerves after a while. I don't feel this book is as good as Ms. Austin's others.

One of my favorite authors  Apr 23, 2010
Very well written, I enjoyed this book, borrowed from library and will probably also buy my own copy to have as well.

A wonderfull Story!  Dec 13, 2009
I have read this book awhile ago, but the story still stays in my mind. The book makes you hungry for GOD. It is very well written.
You do not feel that the writer is preaching even though she is doing it all along. Like Francine Rivers, she is talented to create beautiful scenes with GOD in center of the story.
I will have to buy this book for my keepsake to put on my shelf. One of the best books in my opinion by Lynn Austin.

Fantastic story!  Oct 13, 2009
I have about 25 pages left and just can't stand for this book to end! I just want to finish it so I can share it with others! It has been one of the most enjoyable books I have read and I would recommend it to anybody!
