Item description for Black Star of India Gold Pendant with Indonesian beads by Barbara Garwood...
Overview Black start of India is set in a gold pendant hanging on Indonesian beads.
Supporting the Gospel in Mongolia Designer Barbara Garwood carefully draws each design, considering the unique skills of the artisans and her inspiration from the Word of God. Her ministry supports over 60 artisans in Mongolia, who work exclusively for Barbara manufacturing these exquisite pieces. Because of the high amount of work required to produce each piece, and the desires of younger generations to find success in major cities, it is no longer possible to attract new artisans into the trade. Over the next ten years, it is expected that production of these fine pieces will become increasingly difficult.
While in Mongolia, Barbara takes the time to personally share the Gospel whenever the opportunity arises. By purchasing these pieces, you are actively supporting the spread of the Gospel in Mongolia.
How the pieces are made- Mongolian style filigree and enameled jewelry is handmade with a Russian and Chinese influence from the past 1000 year period of history
- The jewelry was made for the Mongolians originally and then filtered into what is now china. Eventually it was made during the 1700's for the Qing (pronounced Ching) Dynasty, only for the Empresses and its manufacturing was very limited.
- The technique utilized is similar to that used to make the original Faberg Eggs, which were made of Gold, Silver and Precious Stones. These pieces are Sterling Silver with semi-precious stones and some are 24Kt Gold Plated.
- The filigree work is hand fashioned with tweezers and the Sterling Silver wires are shaped into flowers, butterflies and other subjects. These completed compositions are fired in a kiln to approximately 1700F, to be fused together with silver dust. This creates the body of the piece to which the enamel colors and stones are added.
- The outlined designs are then filled with a very fine ground enamel powder. The colors are blended to create special effects and the pieces is once again subjected to the kiln at a temperature of 1500F for brief flashes of time. This turns the enamel into glass with a high gloss finish with permanent beauty. This is a testament to the ability of the craftsmen since the silver body could melt down and all the filigree work be lost.
- The last step is to set the stones and to 24kt gold plate or antique the piece. Barbara uses many unusual stones such as Chrysocolla, Rhodocrosite, Chrysoprase, Water Sapphires, Black Star of India as well as semi-precious stones such as Garnets, Lapis, Amethyst, Madeira Citrine, Onyx and Turquoise.
- Each artist has been extensively trained in the basic techniques and over time they become considered master craftsmen. Because the filigree and enameling skills are totally different abilities, an artist is trained in only one or the other. As a result some items require two artisans to complete a single piece.
We thank you for your support in spreading the Gospel to the people of Mongolia! |

Reviews - What do customers think about Black Star of India Gold Pendant with Indonesian beads?
 | Best friends forever Nov 21, 2007 |
Peter McAllister has a good life. So what if his best friend, Rosemary, is a girl.
But underneath it all, Peter has a lonely life. His parents are dead and he lives with an absent uncle. Then a mysterious woman named Fiona shows up. She tells Peter he is a changeling-a siren child left to live in the human world-and now it's time for him to return. Rosemary thinks differently. Can Rosemary convince Peter that Fiona is lying? Or is it possible she might be telling the truth?
After a choppy beginning, I was able to really get into this story. Peter longs to have a real family, something Fiona promises. The author does a good job showing the conflict between Peter on whether he should leave Rosemary and his life or follow Fiona. I also like how Rosemary has courage to stand up for what she knows to be true.
This is a fast-paced read that will swept the readers away into the mysterious world of sirens. | | | | Courtesy of Teens Read Too Aug 24, 2007 |
Rosemary and Peter have returned in this stand alone sequel to The Unwritten Girl.
It's a few years later, and Rosemary and Peter are best friends and virtually inseparable. Almost. When Peter tries to move things beyond friendship, Rosemary gets scared and runs away. Alone and feeling vulnerable, a vision from Peter's past is able to convince him that he doesn't belong in this world. Rosemary alone can return him to his true home, and help him find his real place. Before she has a chance to decide if she's ready to step beyond their friendship, Peter has disappeared into the mist.
Rosemary must, once again, travel to a strange world. A world full of unbelievable obstacles and extremely dangerous inhabitants. Only Rosemary can see them for who they are, and that makes them like her even less. Not only must she convince Peter that he's in the wrong place, and that she needs him (which involves figuring out her true feelings for him), she'll have to do it all in a very short period of time. Plus, she'll have to sneak in, since she's been banished and faces death if she's caught.
James Bow is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors. While part of me misses the time with Rosemary and Peter between the two books, it's really just because I like the characters so very much! The jump in time is done so well that you, as the reader, don't really question it. And the characters themselves are precisely where I would have imagined them a few years later. Okay, maybe not "precisely," what with the crazy land-in-the-mist thing.
I'm going to stop rambling and just tell you that this is a really, really good book. It's part adventure, part fantasy, part love story (without being too mushy), and you should definitely read it!
