Overview
Examines American politics from 1988 to 2008, focusing on presidential elections, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the War on Terror, and financial patterns.

Publishers Description

Author, historian, and educator William J. Bennett examines America's last two decades.

TwentyAyears ago, John McCain was serving his second year in the Senate, and Colin Powell had just been promoted to chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. There was no Fox News Channel, no American Idol. Saddam Hussein and the Ayatollah Ruholla Khomeni ruled Iraq and Iran, respectively. George W. Bush was the fairly unnoticeable son of the then-president. If you asked someone to "email me," you would have received a blank stare, and "Amazon" was a forest in South America. Finally,A20 years ago a young man named Barack Obama was elected the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. The two decades from 1988 to 2008 have proved to be some of the most pivotal in America's history. Based on a lifetime of experience in government and education, William J. Bennett defines the events that shaped American history during the final years of the century.

Reviews - What do customers think about Century Turns?

A very readable and personal account . . .  Jun 10, 2010
. . . of the period between 1988 and 2008.

William J. Bennett, former Secretary of Education and Drug Czar, and author of "The Book of Virtues" and "America: The Last, Best Hope" provides in "A Century Turns" an historical account of two turbulent decades. Unlike some of his other writing, "A Century Turns" is more personal and anecdotal. Bennett was very politically active during these decades, and as such, his personal observations and reminiscences make this book quite fascinating for those (like myself) who enjoy political autobiography. As such, though, "A Century Turns" is more subjective than one would expect from a straight history text.

For those readers (like me) who "came of age" during this time frame (the 1988 election was the 1st Presidential election in which I was able to vote) "A Century Turns" provides a new perspective on two decades that saw the fall of communism in Russia and Eastern Europe; a Presidential impeachment; the most contested Presidential election since 1876; the events of 9/11; and the election of the first African-American to the Presidency.

Bennett has been, and remains a controversial and polarizing figure to many, and as such, there will be readers on both sides of the political aisle who will find fault with this book. That is to be expected. But this reviewer really enjoyed it.

Highly Recommended!

Perspectives on Recent History  Jun 5, 2010
I hold William Bennett in high respect. His Book of Virtues is a classic by its own right. In "A Century Turns: New Hopes, New Fears," Bennett recounts events since the Reagan Era from Bennett's viewpoint. What emerges is a congruent narrative of world and political perspectives. It's familiar territory to anyone over the age of 30, but Bennett brings back into focus factors that contributed to the news stories we've already heard. It isn't a book of bombshells, and Bennett doesn't sermonize or take sides in debates. Instead, he lays out the stories as they occurred. It lacks a sense of fiery passion about the hot issues we face today. In fact, A Century Turns seems to just lead softly into the Obama administration, without confronting any of the abuses or controversies that have embroiled the nation in the wake of the 2009 recession, partisan Congress, the unprecedented expansion of government, or the explosion of welfare state policies. For an overview of recent history, A Century Turns: New Hopes, New Fears hits all the bases, but it jogs around them without encountering significant obstacles along the way.

A Century Turns New Hopes, New Fears--America 1988 to 2008 By William Bennett  Jun 1, 2010
Anything to do with politics makes me shutter most of the time, but I was running out of things to read and this book was free through Book Sneeze. A Century Turns New Hopes, New Fears written by William Bennett was not what I expected it to be when I first sat down to read.

This book allowed the reader to explore 20 years of history from 1988 to 2008. There were times that I had to force myself to get through it, but for the most part it brought history to life. If history books were like this when I was in school I might not shutter now at the thought of it.

A Century Turns New Hopes, New Fears started with the election of George H. Bush and ended with the election of Barack Obama. It covered major issues that were experienced over the 20 year span, from the Oklahoma City Bombing to the war in Iraq. I am one of those people that try to avoid these major issues when they present themselves in the news, which makes this book an excellent resource for people like me.

Bennett writes in a way that keeps the reader engaged. There were times during the Presidential Elections in the beginning where it was a bit long and boring, but if you can get though that part then you will find yourself reading a book that is difficult to put down

A Century Turns - Bill Bennett (Blog on Books)  May 31, 2010
With the wrath of right-wing media commentators clogging the airwaves - often times shouting rash talking points of firing up constituencies that form the basis of ad hoc groups like the Tea Party, it is refreshing to hear the thoughts and words of a mature, level-headed conservative like Bill Bennett.

Unlink many of his over-exhuberant counterparts (Hannity, Coulter, Palin, Limbaugh, etc.) CNN commentator and former Education Secretary Bennett approaches his output from a reasoned, mature point of view, oft-times reminiscent of the more statesmen like voices of such conservative legends as Bill Buckley and others from the days of yore.

In 'A Century Turns: New Hopes, New Fears," Bennett continues with a followup to his 'Last Best Hope' series (Volumes I & II) by recounting the history of domestic leadership and its effect on both the homefront and abroad from where he left of in 1998. As opposed to a partial and partisan approach to the political history of the late 20th century and through to the election of Barack Obama, Bennett is surprisingly even handed, doling out criticism to both the left and right, while maintaining a historian's point of view about the events of the time. Covering everything from Waco to Clinton's Lewinsky scandal, Iraq and Afghanistan to the campaigns of Bush, Dole, Kerry, Gore, McCain, et al., Bennett seems dead set on treating history as a record of what actually happened and relegates most of his opinions to the footnotes instead.

While nearly everything covered in 'A Century Turns' is well documented and readily available elsewhere, Bennett's own perspective as an administration insider reveals a few new insights based on his access to meetings and phone calls that others may not have in their quiver. But in the end, it is Bennett's remarkable even-handedness that explains why his texts are sometimes used as scholastic volumes in history classes across America. Nice to have a conservative author/commentator who bases his opinions on the facts and not merely on partisan rhetoric.

A Century Turns  May 27, 2010
A Century Turns, written by William Bennet, has the subtitle: "New Hopes, New Fears" on it. In today's modern world of convenience, we can flip on the TV to see just about anything we want. We can bypass all the negative news straight to the night time comedy shows or live in our never ending drama filled sagas found in one of the many soap operas. But you would have to try really hard to totally miss out on what America is about these days. We are all feeling the economic crunch on our wallets. We see the cultural battles found in our own country. We even have issues of who is allowed to be in our country. All in all the U.S. is still a great place to live. But we are faced with many things...New hopes. And New fears. This book gives a detailed history of the past century in this great country, explaining how we got to be where we are today. Bennet has hands on experience that gives the book a credibility you can trust. You get a sense of the ins and outs of the political scene while seeing some of our leaders at their best, and at their worst. I highly recommend this book to anyone, voting with any party, as an informative read and if all else fails, it will bring up a discussion far better than one about your daily soap stars.
