Beverly Lewis paints an engaging and colorful tale in the first rendering of her series, Annie's People. Annie Zook is the daughter of the preacher of the Plain People in idyllic Paradise, Pennsylvania. Although Annie loves and respects her family and loves her Amish life, she is putting off becoming a member of the church, much to the consternation of her father. Conflicted with the God-given artistic ability that she has been secretly nurturing, Annie is at a cross-road. She has been hiding her beautiful artwork because her strict Amish beliefs forbid such things. Annie also recently broke off the relationship with the man she loved because she knew she would have to give up her an important part of herself. When Louisa, Annie's long-time penpal and art teacher from the English world asks to visit Annie's Amish world to escape the aftermath of breaking off her own engagement, Annie finds a kindred spirit. This is the first book I have ever read by Beverly Lewis. It was really good in most ways, but about the main thing I did not like was the end.Beverly Lewis did a wonderful job with the multiple story lines weaved into one main theme,and her characters were well developed. From the begginning... Annie Zook, an Amish girl and preacher's daughter lives in Paradise, Pennsylvania. She is torn between her people and church-all that she ever knew, and her love and passion for art- which is forbidden by her people. Over the years Annie has written her friend, Louisa,a young, modern, sophisticated girl who lives in Colorado who also loves art. Annie has been keeping secret a picture on a canvas up in her mennonite friend's attic that is mysteriously connected with a little Amish boy's kidnapping 16 years earlier. After Louisa has an unexpected break up with her fiance, she writes Annie and asks if she may come and stay with her awhile and live the "simple life"because she just needed to get away. She is in for a suprise! After a welcome invitation from Annie that she may come and stay as long as she wants, Louisa comes, bringing her outside conveniences along- all in tow!Lipstick, jeans, makeup, cell phone, and a laptop.As soon as Annie's father sees Louisa, he wonders if this Jezebel will bring his daughter closer to joining the church or farther away- into the world. He can only hope.Louisa realizes she can't go to church the next morning like she is dressed, so she asks Annie which dress she should wear, holding up 2 bright, won't at all work dresses.So Annie explains and for the rest of her visit Louisa dresses like an Amish- no one knowing the Englisher is not one at all. Over the visit many things happen, and Louisa and Annie become best of friends- both when they really needed each other. Louisa learns more of the Amish ways of handling things like spousal abuse and kidnapping, and can hardly believe the things that happen here that are kept so secret would be broadcasted on the news in her world.Although the end is dissapointing I like the way Beverly Lewis constructed this book.I would reccomend it, and it's really good for the first one in the series.

I liked this book overall because it had a storyline that kept my attention and because it satisfied my curiosity about Amish culture. However, there are a couple of slightly annoying things that prevented my giving this book a top rating: (1) There are a few instances in which the emotional responses of the characters are not very believable. (2) Several times the author tells you something occurred instead of showing you. For example, Annie are her father are about to have a momentous verbal exchange, and then suddenly it already happened and you're reading about the nature of what has been said. Jane Austen does this too, so I guess the author is in good company.

I have read several Beverly Lewis books in the past and have found some more enjoyable than others. This one I particularly enjoyed mostly because of the title character. Annie is an amish girl and intends to remain one, except for the fact that she is an artist at heart and cannot deny her longing for self expression. That self expression is strictly forbidden by her church district. Annie continues to paint secretly. When a well meaning friend enters her in an art contest, and she wins she truly forced to choose between her art and her people. I liked Annie, her character is developed and not overly simplistic as too many christian novel characters can be. What I do find frustrating is that book only stops not really ending, you have to read the following two books in order to discover what the tragic history that is hinted at is and how that effects Annie.
