 | Take a deep breath May 17, 2010 |
Take a deep breath before reading this one. There were several moments so suspenseful that I realized I was holding my breath.
There are two concurrent stories. One involves the mafia, an unsolved bank heist, a murder, and an impoverished New Jersey family with a sick child. The other involves a small Kentucky town, home to a missing child and a young syndicated newspaper columnist.
Kaycee's column is about fear, something she's known since childhood, a legacy passed on from her late mother, who was constantly looking over her shoulder and always on the move. In addition to a constant feeling that "they" are watching her, Kaycee's fears include claustrophobia, basements and the dark. She's driven to question her own sanity. After several unconfirmed reports of being watched, Kaycee is now sure that local law enforcement doesn't believe her, especially when one makes unkind remarks about her column.
In addition to enjoying a good story, I had fun reading about one of Kentucky's prettiest small towns, Wilmore, and landmarks, such as High Bridge and the Kentucky River Palisades. Even the protagonist's favorite soda is mine too, and locally bottled.
A good story with excellent writing. Highly recommended. | | | | Worth the read... May 3, 2010 |
This is a book I thoroughly enjoyed. It was easy to understand the character's fears and how they controlled her. The flow between stories did not take away from the reading experience and came together as the book continued (no spoilers here).
I thought it was interesting at first how short the chapters were, but this actually played into my reading experience. I could quickly consume a chapter when I had a short amount of time available, yet still take time to read and be fully involved in the story.
I think the only minor flaw I found was that for something labeled as part of the Christian category, there wasn't much ever built around this. That being said, her faith and prayer did flow well with the story, so the subtlety of faith did work.
I'm looking forward to reading more of her work.... | | | | Big Honkin' Chicken--or Not? Apr 30, 2010 |
Since her earliest days, fear has stalked Kacyee Raye. It followed her throughout her childhood, passed on by a mother who jumped at shadows and ran from whispers. It snaked its way through her young adulthood, bolstered by the tragic death of a close friend. And it crept into her writing when she began a popular column about facing paranoia.
But which of her fears are real and which imaginary? Kacyee confronts that question when alarming images and mysterious messages appear in her home--on her camera, on her computer screen, and more. Is she crazy? The local police wonder. Kaycee does too. As the incidents and the tension escalate, something has to give. Will it be Kacyee herself?
Brandilyn Collins does an amazing job of combining compelling characters with a page-turning plot. Previous reviewers who find Kaycee's paranoia overdone have little understanding of how past wounds impact present reality. The book's faith component is light but nonetheless appropriate.
I'm not a fan of genres anywhere close to the author's signature "seatbelt suspense," but I couldn't stop talking about this book. Well done, Ms. Collins. After a few more deep breaths, I might venture to pick up another of your titles.
And--oh, yes--does this qualify me for the SMALLER Honkin' Chickens Club? | | | | Not into paranoia Apr 30, 2010 |
| Not really a fan of this type of book. I think the main character had too many phobias and fears and these were communicated constantly. So probably wouldn't get any more by this author. | | | | Exposure Apr 27, 2010 |
| I picked this book from my recommendation list and because I had not yet read one of Ms. Collins' books. I am a suspense/thriller fan and Exposure definitely had me on edge, to the point I felt I had to stop reading because I couldn't take the suspense anymore. I enjoyed the storyline and how it was written. Ms. Collins has a great style and I plan on reading some of her other books. I gave Exposure a 3 star only because I felt something was missing for me to REALLY like the story, but otherwise an enjoyable and emotionally charged read. | | | Write your own review about Exposure
