Item description for Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit by Francis Chan...

Powerful. When is the last time someone used that word to describe you? It doesn't make sense that Almighty God would have children characterized by fear and insecurity. He put His Spirit in us so we could be known for our power (Acts 1:8; 2 Tim. 1:7). Sadly, most believers and churches are known for talent or intellect rather than supernatural power. What's worse is that we're okay with it. Could it be that we've forgotten the One who distinguishes us from every religion and cult in the world? Through solid scriptural support and compelling narrative, breakthrough author Francis Chan returns us to the Holy Spirit as the Bible describes Him. He reminds us that we were not created and saved merely to survive our time on earth. Chan contends that we've ignored the Spirit and are reaping the disastrous results. It's time for the beloved church of Jesus Christ to reverse the trend of neglect. Let's pursue the Spirit-filled life of effectiveness.

Encouraging and Enlightening  May 29, 2010
"The spirit sets us free from the sins we cannot get rid of on our own." ~ pg. 75

When is the last time you prayed to the Holy Spirit? I will admit that I'm one of the people who had almost totally forgotten about the Holy Spirit. In my quest to read the entire Bible I was mostly interested in finding out more about God the Father and Jesus Christ. After reading Francis Chan's Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God I became aware of this book. The truth is that the Holy Spirit may be the forgotten God to a lot of us but He has really been busy in our lives! This book explains how the Holy Spirit works in our lives to perfect us so we can be more like Christ.

Do you wish for more love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control? Then you have selected the right book. While Francis Chan doesn't expand on these qualities he does explain that it is the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.

"Forgotten God" is not charismatic at all. It is very down to earth! Francis Chan mostly explains that the Holy Spirit helps to mold you into the person you are supposed to be. If you are ruled by anger, self-indulgence and immorality you may be grieving the Holy Spirit. Since reading this book I'm now convinced that it is the Holy Spirit who convicts us of sin and perhaps even makes us feel guilty. This is good because eventually we start to hate sin like God does.

Throughout this book I could really respect Francis Chan's honesty, his adventurous spirit and his humbleness. This book made me happy because I realized that while I had obviously been completely ignoring the Holy Spirit He has been working on me all along, changing me from the inside out. I encourage you to read this book and to take the message very seriously. I think you will then be very encouraged and enlightened.

Pushing you into a fight that you'll lose...  May 27, 2010
Just before two teenagers get into a fight, there's usually a shoving match. One would-be warrior pushes the other in a gesture that says, "will this drive you over the edge? Will you throw a punch?"

That's not a bad picture of what Francis Chan is doing in the book "Forgotten God". Much like his earlier book "Crazy Love", Francis spends a good deal of time in this book challenging our self-designations of holiness and righteousness (which always turn out to be self-righteous lies). He's pushing you into a fight with the Holy Spirit, a fight you're gonna lose.

This book is not so much a primer on Pneumatology (the big religious word for studying the Holy Spirit), as it is a challenge for Christians to embrace the idea that we are to be evidence of the Spirit's work in us. While never going full bore with it, Francis certainly makes the implication that if we are found without this evidence of the Spirit's work, that our claims to Christianity are dubious.

As with "Crazy Love", "Forgotten God" is somewhat lacking in the department of "justification" or "Gospel". The story of Jesus' sacrifice for our sins is not given as a major prerequisite as much as it is an assumed prerequisite that you came to the book already possessing. However, I did find that the Gospel did show up more often in this book as it should - a fuller allowance of the Holy Spirit requires a fuller reliance upon the work of the rest of the Trinity.

If you're looking for a challenger who will egg you on to take your faith and the work of the Holy Spirit more seriously, this is the book for you. The literary style is a subtle slow-burn. The prose won't knock you out of your chair with laughter or tears, but it will bring you a time when Francis' point is indelibly tattooed to your soul.

At the end of this book you'll be beaten down by the Holy Spirit, you'll be left with questions, not answers; challenges, not resolutions; and a smoldering fire deep within asking Holy Spirit "what now?"

Can't ask for more!  May 23, 2010
Absolutely nothing was wrong - delivery, arrival time, condition...& the book is exactly what I was looking for.

Amazing  May 21, 2010
I must say that the Holy Spirt is with Francis Chan this book in my opion is trully amazing, God really used him to described how we as belivers forget is one of the best gift given to us, not only do we forget but we often do not practice the fruit that we must to obtain the holy spirt. This book as not only helped me in ways that I must apply to walk in the spirt but to ask God to allow his spirt to manfeist in my life. What I loved most about the book is that he asked the question are we looking any diffrent than world as we accept it Jesus to come in our lives and his spirt to dwells in us is there a change?

Challenging and Provocative  May 19, 2010
My Sunday School class went through The Forgotten God, a chapter a week, and this book was great. This is the only Francis Chan book I've read, but it packs a powerful punch.

Chan challenges the reader instantly, calling our attention to the painful absence of the Holy Spirit in our everyday lives and actions. His simple and straightforward way of writing is not "in your face," but written with conviction and personal struggle.

With life stories and Biblical backing, Chan makes it clear what the Bible is telling us about the Spirit: we have neglected Him and we need Him in our lives. This book is not classically charismatic or extreme, but it is challenging of your typical comfort levels, declaring that if you're not uncomfortable and feeling awkward from time to time, then you likely are away from the Spirit.

Overall, I found this book amazing. It's enlightening and full of hope, and I feel like I've grown in my Walk some by applying the message. If you're looking for a book to challenge your Christian faith, Francis Chan's The Forgotten God definitely is it.
