Item description for Refuge: A True Story Of Faith And Civil War by John Gonleh, & Bruce Beakley...

Overview
John and Bessie Gonlehs saga of faith and endurance extends over seventeen years. Fleeing from Liberias civil war where John was wrongly imprisoned and miraculously survived his own execution, to corrupt United Nations camps in the Ivory Coast and Guinea, the Gonleh family went from a comfortable life in a suburb to living in the most primitive conditions. As penniless immigrants bound for America, God arranged for them to meet a total stranger in a Belgium airport who would financially provide for them and pen their astounding and horrific true story so it could be used to encourage and strengthen the faith of other believers. In this riveting, hardtoputdown book, readers will see the faith of a flawed family in action against witchcraft, starvation, grief and other hardships in the midst of a country turned upside down by civil war. They wonder why God miraculously protects them in some circumstances, but in others leaves them vulnerable and exposed. They ask how in the midst of Gods clear provision they can experience a doubt so great that John even considers a premeditated murder justifiable. The Gonlehs remarkable story of faith, and obedience in listening to the voice of God, changed their lives, and will change the life of everyone that reads it.

Publishers Description
The Gonlehs were devoted Christians but the ravages of war and the death of three of their children would push their faith to the breaking point. They battled hunger, disease and the daily possibility of death at the hands of rebel soldiers children armed with automatic weapons. Even as they witnessed great miracles, they struggled against crushing doubts doubts so powerful that John, a Baptist minister, nearly became a murderer himself. As they recount the details of their harrowing escape, their tragedies and triumphs are strung together with a thread of faith.

Reviews - What do customers think about Refuge: A True Story Of Faith And Civil War?

very inspiring!  Dec 3, 2009
I couldn't put Refuge down. I finished it in two days. I think what held me glued to the pages was the fact that this was an average middle class, church-going family in Liberia whose world was turned upside down in a matter of days. I think this sort of thing could happen in America. To me, it was a warning to be prepared mentally, physically, and spiritually.

WOW! What a HUMBLING story of faith. MUST READ!!  Aug 9, 2009
I am so, so humbled by John and Bessie Gonleh and their family. This book is a MUST READ for EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN over the age of 13 (some parts dealing with civil war and associated violence may be especially hard for children to handle). I cannot imagine how they are able to withstand trauma after trauma, adversity after adversity, year after year, and still cling to their faith in God. What would Christianity in our country look like if American Christians had faith like this?

PLEASE consider buying a copy of this book for yourself and a few extra copies to hand out to others. It may be the best gift you've ever given. God bless!

An heroic story, told with integrity & humility  Apr 9, 2009
Refuge: A True Story of Faith and Civil War
Refuge is truly an incredible story, and very well told. The poignant episodes vividly recounted in the book moved me to reflect at length upon the struggles and hopes of the Gonleh family amid the adversity of the relentless civil war which engulfed and pursued them. It is an heroic story told with integrity and humility.

I got a hold of an early copy of this book and it was difficult to put down! The faith of this family amazes me. The writer provides sensitive insight to an incredible story of survival and hope. A must read for all, I suggest for preteen ages and up.
