Reviews - What do customers think about Redemption Songs?
Super Duper Feb 19, 2007
If you enjoy old hymns with a little more peppy pace - this is for you.
OLD CHRISTIAN STANDARDS MODERNIZED Jan 12, 2007
Jars of Clay continue to be one of my favorite Christian artists to listen to. If you enjoy hymns as much as I do from the perspective that they are "simple" yet glorify God then this is the perfect CD to purchase!
Very disappointing Jan 5, 2007
I wonder if JOC were trying some type of reverse-psychology experiment with this album, by turning great hymns into lame pop tunes in order to make their listeners nostalgic for the original versions and go back to their church hymnals. Naturally, the lyrics on this album are great, but the music is cheesy, uninspired, and actually detrimental to the meanings of the songs. This CD is not what I expected it to be, and that is very disappointing.
A Very Uplifting Musical Experience Jan 3, 2007
This CD by Jars of Clay is a group of hymns that they have "reinterpreted" if you will. I don't know all of the hymns in their original form, but for the ones I know, Jars of Clay did an awesome job. For the hymns with which I was not familiar, hearing them "reinterpreted" makes me want to sing the originals. I highly recommend this CD for a spiritual, uplifting experience.
More good stuff from Jars of Clay Dec 18, 2006
Take an alt-rock Christian Band, some old hymns and standards, and a few guest vocalists, and you've got the idea behid 'Redemption Songs'. And the idea works! Jars of Clay has never been a band to leave well enough alone. With each new release, they seem to explore new ground and refine their sound a bit more. This CD delivers the new by visiting the old. The band breathes new life into hymns like 'God Be Merciful' and 'It is Well With my soul'. Like Sprinsteen did on 'We Shall Overcome', the band just lets the music stand on it's own merits and they have a good time with it. This is especially true of 'Nothing but the Blood', which features the vocals of the Blind Boys of Alabama, "I'll Fly Away" sticks a lot closer to the original, with Sara Kelly lending support on backing vocals and taking the songs to new heights with each note she sings. The other outstanding track is "We are One in the Spirit" which closes out the album. By accident or design, this song about unity aounds haunting and eerily lonesome. Could it be the band's statement on the state of today's Christian church? All in all, this is another fine release from a band that is not content to release formula CD's that sound blandly similar to each other. Keep up the work guys.
