Reviews - What do customers think about How Successful People Think?

Big-Picture Thinking  Oct 21, 2009
I had read Maxwell's previous book, Thinking for a Change. This audio is based on that book, and will teach listeners the 11 most effective ways to think. A quick sample includes Big-Picture Thinking - seeing the world beyond your own needs and how that leads to great ideas; Focused Thinking - removing mental clutter and distractions to realize your full potential; Creative Thinking - thinking in unique ways and making breakthroughs; Shared Thinking - working with others to compound results; Reflective Thinking - looking at the past to gain a better understanding of the future.

A top pick for libraries and business-minded thinkers alike  Oct 17, 2009
Change your thinking and you change your life: that's the basic concept of HOW SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE THINK, offering a simple treatise on how and when to question popular thinking and how to focus thinking to tap into creativity. Eleven keys in a small book derived from material previously published in THINKING FOR A CHANGE makes for a top pick for libraries and business-minded thinkers alike.

How Successful Authors Sell Books  Oct 7, 2009
John C Maxwell has written a couple of dozen books over the years, and I've read several of them; this particular one is solid, if uninspiring. However, it's definitely worth buying, even though all he's doing is rehashing the thoughts of others on how to be successful. But, it's very good advice; originality isn't a requirement here. Relevent information is the key ingredient to successfully sell books. Maxwell delivers.

In the process, the reader will come away with a better understanding of what it takes to be successful in practically any endeavor; and that's not such a bad deal.

The bonus comes for anyone who's thinking about writing a book. Maxwell has a good strategy here; follow it, and you too, may become a best-selling author on this site.

Author should practice what he "teaches".  Sep 23, 2009
The problem I have with this book is very simple. Author didn't think about what he wanted to write. Instead he lets others think up the worthwhile words and then he nicks them. Each short chapter, (approx 10 pages each) contains about 10 quotes from various sources which are at least credited to the source.

For a book about thinking, the author seems to have done very little of his own, and instead relies on others to get his point across. I'm sure he feels he was using the quotes to illustrate his point, and expected to get the added benefits of showing how well researched and schooled he is on the subject. Unfortunately all it really does is erodes his credibility in my opinion. EVERY great or memorable line or idea about thinking, people, business, or success is someone else's, not the author's.

Truth be told, he even nicked from himself as this book is "Derived from material previously published in "Thinking for Change"". At least that is what the back cover says. I have not read that particular book. If you absolutely have to have this book, then go get Thinking for Change instead. That may at least be a bit more original, assuming that too is not a rehash of something else he or someone else has already done.

Author has a lot of "help" books out. Now I see why.

Thinking about Thinking  Sep 23, 2009
I like the fact that this book doesn't take up too much space and...I guess it's true. Good things really do come in small packages.

At first, there were a couple of chapters in which I thought the author was contradicting himself: (chapter 3: Harness Creative Thinking and chapter 4: Employ Realistic Thinking) but after reading the whole thing, I was able to see how it all fits together.

Overall, there were many good ideas in the book; some of them we've heard before, but are definitely worth repeating. My two favorite parts were "Question Popular Thinking" and "Rely on Bottom-Line Thinking" and a nice "feature" to the book were the "Thinking Questions" at the end of each chapter.

This book makes you see things differently.
