Saxon Publishers' two-part set of student workbooks contains all the necessary material for one student for the entire year: worksheets, activity sheets, and oral assessments appear in sequentially correct locations. In addition, we have included a two-page recording form that is designed to accommodate the reslts of all twenty-five assessments taken by the student over the course of the year.
Saxon math programs produce confident students who are not only able to correctly compute, but also to apply concepts to new situations. These materials gently develop concepts, and the practice of those concepts is extended over a considerable period of time. This is called "incremental development and continual review." Material is introduced in easily understandable pieces (increments), allowing students to grasp one facet of a concept before the next one is introduced. Both facets are then practiced together until another one is introduced. This feature is combined with continual review in every lesson throughout the year. Topics are never dropped but are increased in complexity and practiced every day, providing the time required for concepts to become totally familiar. Saxon Math 2 is made up of five instructional components: The Meeting, Number Fact Practice, The Lesson, Guided Class Practice and Homework, and Assessments. When you order the Saxon Math program be sure you get the complete kit. You will need the student workbooks and the teacher's book.
This program is a comprehensive math program that develops on itself. It continually provides assessments as a means of checking and rechecking learning and retention. The one thing it does not do very well is provide a guide to what to do when the child fails the assessment. It moves at a fairly even pace.
