Item description for Affairs of the Net: The Cybershrinks' Guide to Online Relationships by Michael Adamse & Sheree Motta...

Every day the media bombards us stories about people connecting through the Internet. In all this hype, there remains so much confusion and misconceptions as to what is really happening and why people feel the need to connect with others online. The truth is, that in a world of stalkings, STDs and increasing violence, people are searching for intimacy -- possibly more than ever before.

Therapists and Cybershrinks Michael Adamse and Sheree Motta use their expertise as relationship counselors to examine the most important content on the Internet: emotion. They look inside online relationships and answer the whos, hows, and whys. Included are profiles of personalities you're likely to meet in chat rooms and instant messaging; the differences between men and women online; friendships, romances, and affairs in cyberspace; what cybersex really involves; and warning signs to help identify when normal computer use has become an addiction.

Containing real online conversations and first-person situations, this book is a valuable Internet users' guide and one of the most important books on relationships available today. It is fascinating reading for both newbies and pros - for those looking for companionship online and those interested in 'just looking'.

Previously released as 'Online Friendship Chat-Room Romance and Cybersex.'

Reviews - What do customers think about Affairs of the Net: The Cybershrinks' Guide to Online Relationships?

Outdated and simplistic  Dec 7, 2001
I suspect this book was barely on the leading edge when it was first published. The style is over-simplified. The margins with terminology and definitions are distracting. The personal stories are pretty sad and pathetic, especially Sharon's story, which is dispersed throughout the book.

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who is even slightly internet-savvy.

Superficial, by Cyberhating Authors  Sep 9, 2000
This book was written by Shrinks who are not comfortable with computers, and skeptical of communication that is possible in the Cyber Space. The book is mechanical and predictable, as if a publisher approached them to write a book. Get a book like "It takes Two.com" and read what computer loving Shrinks have to say. Cyberspace really is a convenient new way to meet new people, mind to mind - love someone's mind, rather than 'love at first sight' visual chemistry. A real improvement over Newspaper Ads.

Online love  Mar 30, 2000
As a person who has had an "affair of the net," I could relate to many of the stories told in this book. I wanted to have a deeper understanding of this cyber-relationship phenomenon, and Adamse and Motta definately helped to put things into perspective. This is a very interesting as well as an insightful read, and I would definately recommend it to anyone who is, has been, or wants to be involved in an online relationship!
