Publishers Description
In Love Mercy: A Mother and Daughter's Journey from the American Dream to the Kingdom of God, having lived a life of plenty in suburban America, Lisa Samson and her eighteen-year-old daughter, Ty, thought they were traveling to Africa to minister to the people and chronicle the AIDS crisis devastating the continent. Their trip, they assumed, would be missional, merciful, giving. Instead, they experienced a life-changing, soul-rattling journey. As mother and daughter are confronted with incidents of child prostitution, preventable illness, poverty, oppression, abuse, and death so prevalent it leaves no time to mourn ... their journey takes a decidedly different tack. Love Mercy confronts us directly with the AIDS crisis in Africa---in particular Swaziland, which has the highest AIDS rate in the world and where the average life expectancy is thirty-two years of age. Offering two unique perspectives, Lisa and Ty share the questions they encountered on their journey and tell the stories of those they met along the way---from the children themselves, to adult AIDS victims, to the compassionate mercy-givers who seek every day to alleviate their suffering. Smiles in a place of aching sadness. Mercy in a place of heart-wrenching poverty. Two people transformed by God in ways, and places, they never expected, discovering that even in a land riddled with heartache ... Christ's love and redemption are ablaze.

Reviews - What do customers think about Love Mercy?

Sugar and Spice  Jun 6, 2010
This is a fine book about a family leaving behind the typical life in America to give all for those who have nothing. What a beautiful book in the face of today's materialism and complacency. God brings this family from a comfortable life here in America to poverty-stricken Africa, a difficult transition for most people who are used to fancy cars and plenty of expendable cash.

Pros: The topic is timely, and it's an honest account that doesn't gloss over the hardships and doubts that occur on such a quest. It talks about the complexities and family dynamics involved when dealing with other people's problems, problems which include poverty, sickness, addictions, and a tendency among some to take advantage. These are things most charity workers will experience, and the family speaking from the book is no different. While I found myself sympathizing with the family (mostly the mother and daughter come into it since this is their account), there is comfort in knowing you're not alone in a caretaker's role.

Another pro: if you're just beginning your journey, you'll have an idea what preparations you'll need to make, mentally as well as logistically.

Plus, it's great that the journey is out of a love for God, even though I don't agree with the theological/political angles. I'm Reformed, and the author is a former-Reformer turned Catholic.

Cons:

The only con I really had was the theological/political angle. The ideology of the left and Christian doctrine have nothing to do with each other, although that is not immediately obvious for a lot of people. There are subtle but critical differences. I do believe that the authors are very much motivated by charity and faith-based duty, which is absolutely lovely. I just think there is a misunderstanding regarding the critical differences between true charity-a biblical term meaning love-and "social justice," a term the left uses to justify the creation of a dependent constituency for the move toward socialism-a political system that stands against everything in the Bible. Again, to be clear, I do not at all believe that is the author's intent. I think this family is doing something noble and I'm inspired by it. I just think a lot of people are not aware of the subtle but colossal differences between "social justice" and Christian duty that make the two camps irreconcilable. (Biblical: voluntary giving by individuals and conditions to be met by the recipients-pro-life-endorses freedom and individual responsibility, both in giving and receiving; Liberal: government control of the money/population through forced taxation and no character requirements for the recipients-pro-abortion-endorses unnecessary dependency-not a biblical concept)

Other than that problem, this book was quite good and I'm glad for the inspiring and encouraging read. This book presents a grand opportunity to live the selfless, godly lives God requires of us, and nudges the reader from a sleepy tendency to slip back into the American Dream.

Love Mercy is a thought-provoking book  Apr 19, 2010

What Lisa Samson and her eighteen-year-old daughter, Ty, share in Love Mercy will impact you, even as the story behind it impacted the authors. Their trip to Swaziland would be "missional, merciful, giving", or so they thought. "Instead, they experienced a life-changing, soul-rattling journey".

Lisa and Ty invite us to journey along with them as they experience first-hand the poverty and suffering, the devastating effects of the AIDS crisis in Africa. They also witnessed first-hand how men and women full of compassion are working to alleviate suffering.

The book is divided into three sections - before, during and after their trip to Swaziland. In each chapter, Lisa and Ty share their impressions and insights, and ask the hard questions. Ty has included photographs, with comments that illuminate the text. Lisa has included many references to social justice in Scripture. Read prayfully, and with an open heart, this book will aid the reader in discovering just what is meant in Micah 6:8.
"He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."

The message of this powerful book is just what we need to hear. It touches us in the deep places of hearts, shaking us from our complacency. I highly recommend this book.

Lisa Samson is the author of over twenty-five books, including the Christy award-winning novel Songbird. Her novel Quaker Summer was Christianity Today's novel of 2008. she is co-author with her husband, Will, of Justice in the Burbs.

Ty Samson loves, art, literature, playing upright bass, and baking bread. she enjoys working with children, and serving at the East Seventh Street Center in downtown Lexington, Kentucky.

A Life Changing Journey  Apr 18, 2010
I am a big fan of Lisa Samson and looked forward to reading this book. I was not disappointed in this book and was pleasantly surprised by not only the writing talents, but also the compassion of her daughter, Ty. This book tells the incredible journey of a mother and daughter's trip to Swaziland where they learn about the AIDS crisis. The story does not start with thir arrival in Africa, but rather with the life changing events that took place years prior to their trip. It was during this time that the seeds were planted that led to Lisa and her daughter, Ty, making the unforgetful trip. The book is very well written with both Mom and Daughter giving their accounts. It seemed to me that although their mission seemed to be that they would be going to Swaziland to minister to the people in need, that they were ministered to and learned so much from the people they met along the way.

While reading this book I realized that there is so much we can learn from their experience. Not all of us will go to Africa or we may never work directly with people in such dire circumstances. But, we can evaluate our lives and see where it is that we can help.

This book is very well written and in a style that makes you feel like you are with Lisa and Ty. I cried(a lot) and was constantly looking inside myself to see where I can "act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God" (Micah 6:8).

More like 3.5 stars.  Apr 17, 2010
I am not much of a non-fiction reader, however, there were parts of this novel that read like fiction, so they interested me the most. I also loved the illustrations and spiritual lessons that the authors applied to their lives. Lisa has a cute way of saying things at times that really speaks to my heart. I thought this was a good effort on both mother and daughter's part to show the world what they learned from their experiences as they followed the Scriptures about true religion, which is taking care of the orphans and the widows. A few spots in this book were slow and dragged a bit so I skimmed them. The font was a bit hard on my eyes as it was small and the cursive was a bit difficult to read at times as well. Overall, this was a good effort for communicating putting love into action. I also learned something from this book that made me think more about what is important. I also thought it was neat that Tom Davis was part of this book as well as Claudia Mair Burney. I really, really, really loved Tom Davis's novel, Scared. There were some illustrations in this book that were familiar already because I recalled reading them in Scared. The poverty in Swaziland is horrific, and thankfully Children's Hope Chest is an organization that is doing something about it.

God's Love and Mercy  Apr 17, 2010
I was looking forward to reading this book by Lisa Samson and her daughter Ty after reading Ms. Samson's fictional book "Quaker Summer." This book did not disappoint me.

A first hand account of the AIDS crisis in Africa, particularly Swaziland, was something I wanted to learn more about. Lisa Samson and her daughter told their experiences in such a manner I felt I was there with them.

Surprisingly, this story did not start in Africa or end in Africa and that is one of the biggest messages I received from reading this book. We are all God's creation and we are all God's children. We are called to love each and every one. And while I may never have the opportunity to be in Africa to help, God has many people amongst me that I need to love. I also learned I need to ask God to put those people in my path and also look for opportunities to help those around me, regardless of their background or circumstances-to just love without judgment. God has a journey for each of us. Are we willing to go?
